Update: No Censorship at Healy's Cruciform Axis: And I Feel Like Hell

As some of you know by now, I mistakenly took the stops and hangups over at the Healy blog as a censorship question. Well, seems it is. That is, it is a fine Chattablog system thing to stop spam. And I happened to be coming across that way. Imagine that. So apologies all round. Especially to Healy and Josiah. My earlier blog is down below this one. You'll have to click for it.

As I tried to post my comment (see below) at Healy's website I was stopped by this: Your comment submission failed for the following reasons: In an effort to curb malicious comment posting by abusive users, I've enabled a feature that requires a weblog commenter to wait a short amount of time before being able to post again. Please try to post your comment again in a short while. Thanks for your patience.

I waited a few minutes and tried posting again. Same message. My impression is that this is a matter of a fearful censor, who btw has every right to censor. But about hell? Yes, that was the subject. Now there is something intellectually dishonest about talking about hell and then dismissing comments about it. So here are my comments to Healy discussion:

Four in hell (not the four who have commented so far): You might read Jean Paul Sartre's Huis Clos which explores hell as a room in which four people (criminals of some sort or another) must come to terms with being honest. Ironically, one of the four is there for being a pacifist, Garcin. He concludes that "hell is other people."

John, calm down. If something is getting blocked it's my responsibility. Only I (and other chattablogs staff) have access to the blacklist. Further, sometimes it happens that if and when people are posting from the same IP a whole lot that IP gets locked down for awhile (another way to cut back on comment spam). There isn't any censorship going on on Healy's part.

Josiah, I can't imagine being calmer. A lack of calmness was never an issue. I think you're misreading directness for overexcitement. Projecting feelings into another's language is useless in my opinion. What I stated was pretty factual, and what you stated adds to my limited but pretty real understanding of what I experienced.

Now, whether in reality it is Healy or you or someone else responsible for the cautionary message and the block, it is still a matter of censorship (we may call it something else, which may sound better, but again, I don't really care either way, except to make the point that my comments were blocked).

Is it plainly ineffective/incovenient for those participating to have comments blocked? Sure. But that's the way it is done. And if so, others (including myself) may speak to it. I hope you can understand that point of view.

JosiahQ only knows censorship. He fears thoughts that do not mesh with his. If he can't censure/ban you he will delete your post altogether. He will even go so far as to threaten you.

Posted by: Anti-JosiahQ at May 21, 2005 12:04 PM

Bailes does not believe any of the propaganda spewed from this anti-Josiah fellow. It is Bailes' feeling that this Anti-Josiah character should be banned. For I have never known anyone less threatening than JosiahQ.

Gee, I wonder who "Anti-Josiah" could be? Hmmm...

Posted by: Pro-Josiah II, the Sequel at May 21, 2005 03:45 PM

hey John, my bad on misreading you as being upset over the comment thingie.

though it is the case that all of the blog sites run under a blacklist which runs against submitted comment. This also includes an "ip throttle", which if a certain number of comments come from a given IP in a certain amount of time, comments aren't allowed to be submitted from that IP for a certain amount of time.

The only way for Healy to block your comments is to completely IP ban you in his blog, which WOULDN'T generate that error which you saw, all it'd do is sit there and idle.

So, all that to say, just trust me, Healy wasn't blocking your comment, it was just a software bug/thingie from the blacklist, and I most definitely wasn't blocking you.

Finally, if keeping troll sob's from flaming qualifies as censorship, then heck, I'll roll with that. Gotta have some kinda standards. I suppose it's "arbitrary" in the sense that the blog sites are my hobby, but then again they're free to the public, I give an enormous amount of time to their upkeep, and I've got some great help from Ron & Huffine & Maphet and some others and we usually talk decisions over when it comes to banning someone or particular IP's.

And it takes an awful lot to get on the "bad" list. I get e-mails all the time from folks complaining "how come you let that person have a blog" etc. etc. You've gotta be a fairly persistent prick to get us to try to shut you down.

Posted by: The Real Josiah at May 21, 2005 04:07 PM

And as long as you're keeping us safe and secure, my bloggerman friend (instead of as Darth Sidious, of course), I feel better. Healy were going at it earlier, and of course I thought it would be fun to shine a light on him. I will retract my earlier blog, verily soon.

Posted by: HurrahForJosiah at May 21, 2005 04:13 PM

Yeah, that's it. I am being evil when I post. Or is it that I am just not singing you song?

Disagree with Josiah = troll sob

Posting that does not mesh with Josiah = flaming

Censorship of alt ideas = standards

Pass the Coptix/Josiah sniff test - in other words, think like them = free (blog) to the public

Hey, at least Josiah is not deleting my post this time! Maybe he is starting to grow up? Nah.

As for Bailes not believing... Oh, believe it. Josiah can't handle alt ideas from his. He likes to feel like he has some power. $5.00 says he hits his wife.

...how bout you go screw yourself....
You're an idiot.

No seriously. You're dumb. As in, not intelligent. Not only THAT, but if I ever meet you, I'm going to kick your ass.

Posted by: fairly persistent prick at May 21, 2005 06:43 PM

what I'm surprised at is that you seem surprised I want to kick your ass. I'm not saying it's a good thing, but what amazes me is that you think your behavior doesn't warrant that kindof response. But whatever, we'll just do our best to keep you off chattablogs. It's not an absolute thing, but something that's fairly easy to stay on top of.

Posted by: JosiahQ at May 21, 2005 08:01 PM

I have never said anything that was not in response to some childish action on your behalf. I have said some things I should not have, that, I admit and apologize for.

Before any of that, all I ever did was disagree with you and you wold attack and or delete my post.

I'll make the same offer I made the first time you threatened me.

I am willing to meet you - in a public place - for coffee or whatever.

Better still, you can meet me tomorrow at my Church. This way you know I won't do anything. If after you meet me and we talk..., if you still feel the childish and unChristian drive to hurt me then that's your issue.

You have my contact information from my request for a chattablog. Your call.

"$5.00 says he hits his wife."

Whatever offense has been tossed your way, whatever reason you have to feel frustrated, no matter how you look at it, that comment was incredibly lousy. Just nasty. Absolute slander, and gleeful at that.

Hey, maybe you slipped up. Happens online. But that needs an apology, and right quick.

Does it seem like a lot of people around here have really short fuses? My God, it's like a cyberspace bar fight every other week here.....I love it.

Posted by: Tyler Grisham at May 21, 2005 09:54 PM

Okay. What have I spawned? Tyler is right: we've got an old fashioned bar fight in cyberspace. And I thought I was just walking in for a drink (I was on the subject of hell, after all). As far as gambling, I think the ante is way too low. Mesh, please, please, please update your blog! You know I love your wit. Josiah, or as I shall call him henceforth "Q," are you really mad at me?

Speaking of Banning
Why is this allowed to go on for two years?

Posted by: Everybody at May 22, 2005 07:58 AM

Everybody, the post (more the comments) you link to is more of an embarrassment than this playground fight - not sure how either will be resolved. Bailes, sorry your blog's been trampled on.
